What is the Feast of the Meeting of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Temple?
In our Orthodox tradition, this feast is is one of the twelve Great Feasts of the Church. On this day we commemorate Jesus Christ meeting with his people, Israel, in the persons of the Prophet Simeon and the Prophetess Anna as recorded in Saint Luke’s Gospel (2:22-40). This feast is of ancient origin, being attested to in early 300’s and and fully celebrated by the 600’s.
In the Western Christian tradition, the name for this feast day is also popularly known as Candlemas (or the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin). Candles are blessed on this day to be used through the coming year.
Troparion for the feast:
Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, full of grace! / From you shone the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God. / Enlightening those who sat in darkness! / Rejoice, and be glad, O righteous elder; / You accepted in your arms the Redeemer of our souls, / Who grants us the Resurrection.
